First place to look would be Craigslist or local pawn shops, you'll get the most bang for your buck. In this hub I will review entry level drum sets buy major drum company.
On thing to keep in mind that basically all beginner drum set are the same. They are mostly poplar drum shells made by keller. Then the hardware, finish and, drum heads are applied buy the Company that putts its badge on the front.
Yamaha Gigmaker
I'll give you a warning that I am bias toward Yamahas. I own a nice set of "Yamies" that I saved up for 2 years to buy in high school. I love them and plan on them being my main kit till I die.
That being said this kit is great. I'll tell you the facts and let you decide for you for your self. First, the drum finish. Most entry level kits have wrap finishes in solid colors. The Gigmakers, on the other hand, have wrap finished in sparkle colors; black, white, red, blue, and lime green. Other features that make the Gigmakers stand out is wooden bass drum hoops, hex ball tom mounts, and a quality bass drum pedal.
One thing to keep in mind is that yamahas tom mounts are proprietary so you could not mount drums from a different company on them farther down the line.
Pearl Forum
Pearl is one of the most popular drum makers, and there is a good reason for that. These drums have many great features. The most notable is the fact that it has tom suspension mount. This is a feature that is usually exclusive to intermediate and pro level kits. When a tom is suspended it is easier for the drum to vibrate. This gives the drum more volume and better sustain and tone. Other feature are wood bass drum hoops and black hardware, which really makes them stand out visually. These drums come in a wrapped finish in solid red, white, black or chrome.
Again Pearl also uses tom mounts mostly exclusive to their brand.
Tama Swingstar
Tama's entree level kit is the swing star. This is a quality kit but dose not have many of the feature of the Pearl or Yamaha. They do feature L rod tom mounts, which is the most common. One down side to this kit is the bass drum hoops. The hoops are made of some sort of plastic. The Swing Star kit comes with wrap finishes in Black, Red, and Bronze.
Sonor Force
Sonor are drums made in Germany, a region known for its excellent engineering. These drums are no exception. They feature low mass hard ware which help the drum resonate. In the hardware are fined pitch lugs for more precise tunings. Once you get that perfect tuning with those lugs the drum will stay in tune for quite some time. This is attributed to Tune Safe - Real Eye Catchers. These drum feature L rod tom mounts. Finishes include black, white, red, blue, copper, and chrome
